Russia Seeks Pakistani Fish as Export Opportunities Expand

Pakistan’s seafood industry is seeing fresh opportunities in the Russian market as demand for Pakistani fish and seafood continues to grow. Encouraging signs emerged during a recent seafood exhibition in St Petersburg, where a Pakistani company reported strong interest from Russian buyers.

Seagreen Enterprises, a seafood company established in 1983 with its main facility at the Karachi Fish Harbour, represented Pakistan at the Global Fishery Forum and Seafood Expo. The company participated in the event in coordination with the Pakistan Trade Mission in Russia, highlighting the potential for Pakistani seafood exporters to expand their presence in the Russian market.

The development follows Russia’s approval in April of 16 Pakistani seafood processing plants for exports to the country. The approval has opened access to a market estimated to have export potential of around $300 million for Pakistan’s fisheries sector. The move is part of Pakistan’s efforts to explore non-traditional export destinations, with Russia viewed not only as a promising market itself but also as a potential gateway to other Central Asian markets.

Exports remain a key source of opportunity for Pakistan’s fisheries and seafood industry. Domestic fish consumption remains relatively low, at around 2 kilograms per person annually, compared with the global average of approximately 20.5 kilograms. While low consumption presents a nutritional challenge, the limited domestic market also makes international trade particularly important for businesses operating in the sector.

However, Pakistan’s seafood exporters have faced significant challenges in accessing high-value international markets. Restrictions and bans linked to phytosanitary concerns, quality standards and unsustainable fishing practices have affected the sector’s export potential. These difficulties have often pushed seafood products toward lower-value markets instead of higher-end destinations.

The growing interest from Russia could provide Pakistani seafood exporters with an opportunity to diversify their markets, improve export revenues and strengthen access to other regional markets, provided the industry can maintain international quality, safety and sustainability standards.
