Pakistani World Context Organizes Robotics Hackathon at UC Berkeley

Pakistani robotics data company World Context hosted its first robotics hackathon at the University of California, Berkeley, bringing together 13 teams to develop innovative projects using robotics datasets. The event was part of the company’s efforts to promote artificial intelligence and technology collaboration between Pakistan and the United States.

Organised in partnership with Blockchain at Berkeley, the hackathon received sponsorship from Google Gemini, ElevenLabs, The Hackathon Company, Lovable, Praxis Robotics and UC Berkeley Startup. Participants worked across hardware, software and visualization categories using datasets provided by World Context.

In the hardware track, Sortbot won for its project focused on developing robots capable of sorting different types of objects. Reconstructors secured the software track with a project aimed at recreating World Context data in the physical world. The team also won the visualization category with a related simulation.

The event offered a total of $4,500 (approximately Rs1.25 million) in cash prizes.

The hackathon also demonstrated the growing role of human demonstration data in robotics. Such data captures how people perform tasks in real-world environments, providing examples that can help developers train and improve robots designed to interact with the physical world.

World Context Founder and CEO Sherdil Ali Khan praised the quality of the projects and said the company intends to collaborate with universities on similar events in the future. He noted that the talent showcased at Berkeley demonstrated opportunities for greater technology partnerships between Pakistan and US institutions and companies.

Khan also highlighted the creativity of participants, saying students used World Context’s datasets in innovative ways that the company had not anticipated, demonstrating the potential of human demonstration data for advancing robotics technology.
