In a major win for Pakistan’s tech ecosystem, the voice AI startup Uplift AI has raised $3.5 million in seed funding. The round was led by the world-renowned accelerator Y Combinator and Indus Valley Capital, marking a significant milestone for local language processing technology.
Breaking the Literacy Barrier
Founded by former Apple and Amazon engineers Zaid Qureshi and Hammad Malik, Uplift AI is tackling a critical economic hurdle: the fact that 42% of Pakistani adults cannot read. By developing sophisticated voice models for regional languages like Urdu, Punjabi, and Balochi, the startup is making digital tools accessible to everyone through simple speech.
-
Flagship Model: "Orator," their lead AI, delivers Urdu speech with human-like realism.
-
Traction: Over 1,000 developers are already using their APIs to build everything from FIR registration bots to rural healthcare intake systems.
-
Industry Adoption: Companies like Syngenta Pakistan are already using this tech to provide real-time agricultural intelligence to farmers in their native tongues.
Investment in Impact
The funding will be strategically deployed to scale operations and create significant local impact:
-
Job Creation: Roughly $1 million is earmarked for data gathering and labeling, a process expected to generate thousands of jobs across Pakistan.
-
R&D Focus: The team will continue building state-of-the-art speech models for the five major Pakistani languages to ensure localized accuracy that outperforms global giants like Google and OpenAI.
"Voice technology has the potential to uplift our entire GDP by giving everyone access to knowledge and opportunity," says Hammad Malik, CEO of Uplift AI.
