Sindh Restricts Business and Restaurant Hours to Conserve Fuel Under New Austerity Plan

In a decisive move to curb national fuel consumption and manage the escalating energy crisis, the Sindh government has officially introduced revised operating hours for all markets, restaurants, and wedding halls across the province. This austerity measure aligns with broader federal efforts to stabilize the economy and protect foreign exchange reserves as global oil prices continue to fluctuate.

According to the official notification issued by the Home Department, the new schedule varies based on regional geography. In districts outside of major divisional headquarters, all shops, markets, and shopping malls are required to cease operations by 8:00 PM. Businesses located within divisional headquarters have been granted a slight extension, allowing them to remain open until 9:00 PM throughout the week. To ensure public safety and convenience, a wide range of essential services including pharmacies, hospitals, standalone tandoors, and fuel stations are strictly exempt from these restrictions.

The hospitality and events industries have also been assigned specific windows to optimize energy use. Restaurants and hotels are now restricted to dinner-only dine-in services, operating between 7:00 PM and 11:30 PM, though the government has clarified that home delivery and takeaway services may continue without time constraints. Similarly, marriage halls and banquet facilities must now operate within a four-hour window, concluding all events by midnight.

These regulations come at a critical time as Pakistan navigates the economic fallout of regional geopolitical tensions, which have strained global supply chains and driven up the cost of imported commodities. Local commissioners and the Sindh Police have been directed to enforce these timings strictly to ensure the success of the province-wide energy conservation strategy.
