Punjab to Combat Urban Flooding with 67 Rainwater Storage Tanks Across 52 Cities

The Punjab government has launched a significant infrastructure project to construct 67 underground rainwater storage tanks across 52 cities under the Punjab Development Programme (PDP). This strategic initiative is designed to bolster water management, enhance water security, and mitigate urban flooding by efficiently capturing rainwater in key urban centers.

Project Scope and Distribution

Work is already underway at numerous sites to ensure the infrastructure is operational before the upcoming monsoon season. The distribution of these tanks spans several districts:

  • Central and Northern Punjab: Kamoke will receive the highest number with 19 tanks, followed by Kot Abdul Malik and Ferozewala with 14 each. Other key locations include Wazirabad (9), Silanwali (8), and Gojra (10).

  • Southern and Western Punjab: Jaranwala is set for 13 tanks, while Shakargarh and Sambrial will each host 12. Significant work is also planned for Khanewal (11) and Kot Radha Kishan (10).

  • Progress Update: Excavation and structural work have already been completed in Mianwali, Vehari, and Mailsi.

Strategic Goals

This project is inspired by international infrastructure standards, specifically the Japanese model for underground water management. The primary objectives include:

  1. Flood Prevention: Reducing the risk of waterlogging and urban flooding in vulnerable cities.

  2. Water Security: Efficiently storing rainwater to support sustainable development and improve the provincial water strategy.

  3. Infrastructure Readiness: The government has issued strict directives to complete all construction on schedule to provide relief before the monsoon rains begin.
