PM Rolls Out "Precision Subsidies" to Combat Record Fuel Costs

In a direct move to stabilize the domestic economy following a historic spike in energy prices, the federal government has launched a multi-sector relief package. This "cushioning" strategy, announced by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, aims to protect the country's most vulnerable commuters and the critical food supply chain from the immediate shock of the new rates.

Effective immediately, petrol has climbed by PKR 137.24 per litre, while High-Speed Diesel (HSD) has seen an even steeper jump of PKR 184.49. To counter this, the government is deploying a tiered subsidy system rather than a blanket price cut, ensuring that taxpayer funds are directed exactly where they are needed most.

Relief for Commuters and Daily Workers

The centerpiece of the plan is a dedicated subsidy for the millions of Pakistanis who rely on two-wheelers for their livelihood.

  • The Biker Benefit: Motorcycle owners will receive a PKR 100 per litre discount. This is capped at 20 litres per month and will remain in place for an initial three-month window.

  • Public Transport Support: To prevent a massive hike in passenger fares, public service vehicles are eligible for up to PKR 100,000 per month in financial assistance.

Protecting Food Security and Logistics

Recognizing that fuel costs drive food inflation, the government is extending significant support to the agricultural and transport sectors.

  • Small Farmers: A one-time cash grant of PKR 1,500 per acre has been authorized for small-scale landholders to offset the rising cost of running tube wells and tractors.

  • The Logistics Backbone: Inter-city goods transporters and trucks carrying essential food items will receive subsidies ranging from PKR 70,000 to PKR 80,000 per month, depending on vehicle size. This measure is specifically designed to keep the "shelf price" of groceries stable for the general public.

The Economic Balance: While the price hike reflects the harsh reality of international market pressures, the Finance Minister noted that these subsidies are a necessary "firewall" to prevent the middle and lower classes from bearing the full weight of global volatility.

The government has also signaled that low-income rail passengers will be the next group to receive targeted relief, with implementation details expected in the coming weeks.
