In a strategic push toward energy independence, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called upon provincial governments and law enforcement agencies to accelerate the adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs). The directive aims to slash the nation's massive fuel import bill and safeguard dwindling foreign exchange reserves.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the induction of new eco-friendly cruisers into the Islamabad Capital Traffic Police fleet, the Prime Minister emphasized that transitioning away from internal combustion engines is no longer just an environmental choice it’s an economic necessity.
Key Highlights of the Initiative:
-
Initial Rollout: 15 high-tech electric vehicles have been deployed to the Islamabad police as a pilot phase.
-
Economic Impact: By eliminating the need for petrol and diesel, these units offer a cost-efficient alternative to traditional patrol cars.
-
Strategic Goal: Lowering the demand for imported fuel to help stabilize the country’s external account amid volatile global oil markets.
"The wider adoption of electric mobility across government sectors is a triple win: it ensures long-term savings, promotes environmental sustainability, and eases the pressure on our national economy," the Prime Minister stated.
This move aligns with a broader national energy conservation strategy. Just recently, progress was made on this front with a Chinese automotive giant announcing plans to establish an EV manufacturing plant in Punjab, signaling a shift toward a localized green energy ecosystem.
Officials confirmed that this is only the beginning, with more electric units expected to be inducted into various departments in the coming months.
