The Government of Pakistan is looking to strengthen its collaboration with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to fast-track critical communication and transportation initiatives nationwide. A high-level AIIB delegation, led by Vice President Konstantin Limitovskiy and Director General Xiaohong Wang, met with Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan in Islamabad to discuss these strategic investment priorities.
Priority Projects and Timelines
During the discussions, Minister Abdul Aleem Khan underscored the government’s commitment to finalizing several major transport projects within the next two years. Key initiatives highlighted include:
-
Karachi–Hyderabad and Hyderabad–Sukkur Motorway: Identified as a top priority for economic growth. The design for this corridor includes an eight-lane segment linked to Karachi Port, transitioning to a six-lane configuration for the remainder of the route to Sukkur.
-
Lahore–Sialkot and Kharian–Rawalpindi Motorways: These projects are also slated for completion within the two-year window. Once operational, the new connectivity is expected to shorten the travel distance between Lahore and Islamabad by approximately 100 kilometers, offering significant fuel and time savings.
Modernizing Emergency Response
Beyond traditional road infrastructure, the Minister announced plans to enhance highway safety through a new partnership with the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). The initiative aims to establish:
-
A dedicated Air Ambulance Service.
-
Modern trauma centers strategically positioned along major motorways to improve emergency medical response times for travelers.
Strengthening Future Cooperation
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with the AIIB delegation expressing a strong interest in expanding its footprint in Pakistan’s infrastructure sector. Minister Khan invited the delegates to visit existing National Highway Authority (NHA) projects to witness firsthand the country's development progress. The AIIB team confirmed their commitment to ongoing engagement, with plans for further site visits in Lahore.
