Pak-China Alliance Strengthened by Zardari’s High-Level Vision

President Asif Ali Zardari’s recent official visit to China has injected new momentum into the Pakistan-China bilateral relationship. By securing pivotal agreements spanning defense, health, agriculture, and digital technology, the visit successfully expanded the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Phase II.

The strategic breakthroughs were detailed during a joint press conference on Tuesday by Presidential Spokesperson Murtaza Solangi, Senator Saleem Mandviwala, and Presidential Press Secretary Daniyal Gillani.

Submarines and Strategic Milestones

A central highlight of the diplomatic mission was the commissioning ceremony of the Pakistan Navy’s first Hangor-class submarine in Sanya, Hainan Province.

"The strategic significance of the Hangor-class submarine project is the jewel in the crown of this visit," Presidential Spokesperson Murtaza Solangi stated, drawing a direct comparison to the historic, game-changing Pakistan-China JF-17 Thunder fighter jet program.

Senator Mandviwala revealed that the submarine project holds deep personal and historical value for President Zardari, who originally initiated the high-stakes negotiations back in 2012 before the formal contract was signed in 2015. Despite persistent technical bottlenecks and unforeseen delays over the years, the President consistently championed the initiative, making its delivery a deeply emotional milestone.

Targeting Provincial Strengths

Rather than relying solely on centralized governance, the Pakistani delegation focused on hyper-local economic synergy by visiting key Chinese provinces tailored to Pakistan's immediate development needs.

Hunan Province—frequently celebrated as the breadbasket of China—was chosen specifically for its cutting-edge agricultural technology. During his time in Hunan, the President also visited Shaoshan, the ancestral hometown of Chairman Mao Zedong, where he laid a ceremonial wreath to honor the foundational historical ties between the two nations. Meanwhile, Hainan Province was utilized to explore advanced island economics, maritime trade, and industrial free-trade zone frameworks.

Landmark Economic and Industrial Collaborations

The diplomatic mission yielded highly practical solutions for Pakistan's domestic infrastructure, public health, and trade sectors through several key agreements:

  • Water Security: The delegation signed a pivotal MoU on seawater desalination to establish a 5-million-gallons-per-day desalination plant, targeted entirely at alleviating Karachi's severe clean water deficit.

  • Healthcare Expansion: A major agreement was inked with the Laiyang Biological Research Institute to manufacture vaccines locally in Sindh, with a primary focus on producing vaccines to combat foot-and-mouth disease in livestock.

  • Agricultural Growth: Pakistan partnered with one of China’s largest tea conglomerates to conduct specialized land surveys across Pakistan. The goal is to identify ideal domestic cultivation zones and significantly reduce the country's reliance on expensive tea imports.

  • Manufacturing and Exports: High-level discussions were held with a major heavy machinery manufacturer regarding setting up production and export operations within Pakistan. To finalize the details, a Chinese delegation is scheduled to visit Pakistan within the next 60 days.

Breaking the Silver Screen: A New Era for Cultural Ties

Recognizing that deep diplomatic ties require cultural resonance, Senator Mandviwala announced a targeted initiative to break into China's strictly regulated, highly lucrative media market. Historically dominated in the region by Indian cinema, Pakistani films and television dramas are now getting a systematic push.

As a historic first step, the critically acclaimed Pakistani blockbuster The Legend of Maula Jatt recently enjoyed a massive, high-profile premiere in Beijing. The film is officially set for its wide commercial theatrical release across China on May 21 and 22, opening a vibrant new door for Pakistani artists and storytellers on the global stage.
