Murree’s traffic police have started enforcing a new Punjab government ordinance that sharply increases penalties for a wide range of offences in the hill station. Under the revised schedule, motorists face higher fines for red-light violations, negligent driving, driving without a licence, lane violations, emitting excessive smoke, using mobile phones while driving, and carrying more than two people on a motorcycle, with commercial vehicles attracting the heaviest penalties.
The ordinance also introduces a points-based system for driving licences, where repeated violations can ultimately affect a driver’s licence status. Authorities say the tougher fines and points regime are intended to improve traffic discipline, curb reckless behaviour, and enhance safety for residents and tourists on Murree’s busy and often hazardous roads.
