Acting on directives from Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, the Gwadar Port Authority has overhauled its tariff structure to capture a larger slice of global transit and transshipment traffic. The aggressive price cuts are designed to position the deep-sea port as a primary gateway for trade connecting Central Asia, the Middle East, and East Africa.
Major Reductions in Port Charges
The new policy introduces significant discounts aimed at reducing operational costs for international shipping lines. Key changes include:
-
Berthing Fees: Reduced by 25% for container vessels and ships carrying transit or transshipment cargo.
-
International Transshipment: Port charges on transshipment container cargo have been slashed by 40%.
-
Transit Cargo: Charges on transit container cargo have been lowered by 31%.
-
Storage Incentives: Gwadar now offers 30 days of free storage for general cargo—a massive increase compared to the five-day standard at other national ports.
Strategic Timing Amid Regional Shifting
The move comes as maritime traffic increasingly diverts toward Pakistani ports due to rising tensions in the Middle East. Minister Chaudhry noted that Gwadar is uniquely positioned to offer a low-cost, congestion-free alternative for global shipping.
"These incentives take effect immediately. Our goal is to transform Gwadar into a competitive, investor-friendly hub that stimulates national economic activity and expands our maritime sector," the Minister stated.
Operational Milestone: MV Yuan Hang Wei Ye
Highlighting the port’s growing utility, the vessel MV Yuan Hang Wei Ye successfully berthed at Gwadar on May 11 at 10:15 am. The ship arrived with 34,000 tonnes of cargo (approximately 20,000 pieces). In a significant display of transshipment capability, the vessel is offloading consignments at Gwadar destined for Abu Dhabi and Kuwait.
Economic Impact for Balochistan
Chairman of Gwadar Port, Noorul Haq Baloch, emphasized that this revised structure is a catalyst for local development. By attracting international investors and boosting commercial volume, the port is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities and accelerate economic growth across Balochistan.
