Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, announced a significant milestone for Pakistan's tech sector: Google has started manufacturing Chromebooks in Haripur.
The public-private partnership, executed in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence Production and the National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) and a local company, is projected to produce approximately 600,000 Chromebooks annually. The initiative aims to provide affordable, high-quality devices, especially for the education sector.
Speaking to the media, Minister Khawaja noted that this high-tech venture reflects growing global corporate confidence in Pakistan's economy, leading to technology transfer and new job creation. She also confirmed that Google has completed its registration in Pakistan and plans to open a formal office soon.
The Minister highlighted that the Haripur facility already employs around 600 young individuals, with plans to expand the assembly line for exports and further job creation, noting the strong involvement of women engineers.
