Punjab Interest-Free e-Taxi Scheme: Applications Opening Soon

Lahore: The Punjab government is poised to revolutionize the province’s transportation landscape with the imminent launch of its electric taxi (e-taxi) scheme in August 2025. Applications for this groundbreaking initiative are anticipated to open in the coming weeks via a new digital platform currently under development by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB).

According to Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan, this ambitious project is a cornerstone of the provincial government’s comprehensive strategy for fostering sustainable mobility and bolstering economic empowerment across Punjab. The scheme is designed to provide electric taxis through an accessible model of easy, interest-free installments, underpinned by a meticulously crafted business and financial framework.

The pilot phase of the scheme will see the distribution of 1,100 electric taxis. A significant portion, 1,000 vehicles, will be allocated to fleet owners, each required to procure a minimum of ten taxis. The remaining 100 taxis will be distributed on an individual basis, including a special quota of 30 e-taxis specifically reserved for women drivers. This strategic allocation underscores the government’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and encouraging greater female participation within the transport sector.

To maximize accessibility for a diverse range of drivers and entrepreneurs, the government will absorb the costs associated with markup, token tax, and vehicle registration fees. Furthermore, nine reputable electric vehicle suppliers have been shortlisted. These suppliers will not only provide the vehicles but also be instrumental in establishing a robust infrastructure of charging stations, service centers, and spare parts facilities across the province, ensuring comprehensive support for the scheme.

Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan confirmed that the foundational work for the project is nearing completion, with the formal launch expected within the next two weeks. He emphasized that this initiative extends beyond merely promoting a greener transportation system; it also unlocks new and vital income-generating opportunities for individual drivers and existing ride-hailing companies.

As the world grapples with the escalating challenges of climate change and urban congestion, the Punjab e-taxi scheme represents a pivotal stride towards establishing a truly sustainable public transport system within the province.
