The Punjab government has officially greenlit a massive PKR 6 billion remodelling initiative aimed at revitalizing Murree’s iconic Mall Road. The project seeks to strike a delicate balance between preserving the hill station's colonial-era charm and integrating high-end modern amenities to accommodate the growing influx of tourists and residents.
Restoration and Land Acquisition
Preliminary work is already in full swing following the strategic demolition of an aging structure to clear the path for redevelopment. To realize the full scope of the project, the provincial administration is in the process of acquiring approximately 20 kanals of land.
Officials have assured that a comprehensive compensation package is being distributed to those impacted by the construction. This includes financial settlements for:
-
Land Acquisition: Competitive market rates for seized property.
-
Structural Costs: Reimbursement for the value of existing buildings.
-
Business Interruption: Financial support for local shopkeepers facing temporary loss of trade.
Preserving Heritage While Upgrading Infrastructure
The core philosophy of the PKR 6 billion investment—the largest development package in Murree's history is the "historic restoration" of Mall Road’s traditional aesthetics. The plan focuses on:
-
Aesthetic Restoration: Using materials and designs that reflect the road's historic character.
-
Infrastructure Upgrades: Improving drainage, lighting, and pedestrian pathways.
-
Enhanced Tourist Experience: Installing better seating, information kiosks, and public facilities to solidify Murree’s status as a premier travel destination.
The administration emphasized that every phase of the execution is being monitored to ensure that modern facilities do not overshadow the unique architectural heritage that makes Mall Road a national landmark.
