Federal Government to Fully Fund Gilgit-Baltistan’s 100MW Solar Initiative

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has committed full federal funding for a major 100MW solar power project in Gilgit-Baltistan. This announcement follows a high-level briefing on Tuesday focused on strategies to bolster the region's energy infrastructure and resolve persistent electricity shortages.

Key Highlights of the Solar Expansion

The government’s plan centers on shifting the region toward sustainable, renewable energy sources. Key developments include:

  • 100MW Solar Project: The federal government will bear the total financial cost of this flagship project, ensuring it moves forward without placing a fiscal burden on the provincial administration.

  • 18MW Infrastructure Project: A separate initiative is currently underway to provide dedicated solar power to government facilities across the Gilgit and Diamer divisions.

  • Projected Completion: The 18MW project is currently on schedule and expected to be fully operational by December 2026.

These initiatives are part of a wider strategic push to decentralize power generation and provide reliable, green energy to the residents of Gilgit-Baltistan.
