Pakistan is seeking to attract Canadian investment in its mining and minerals sector as Canadian companies prepare to participate in an upcoming minerals investment forum. The development was discussed during a meeting between Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan and Canada’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Tarik Ali Khan.
The Canadian delegation is expected to include companies involved in mineral exploration, mining services, equipment and supply chains. Jam Kamal welcomed the interest, highlighting mining as a priority sector for the government and assuring Canadian investors of support in addressing investment concerns.
The two sides also discussed accelerating negotiations on the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA), with the next round expected in the first week of October. The agreement is aimed at strengthening investor confidence through legal protections, arbitration and dispute-resolution mechanisms, potentially encouraging more Canadian investment and joint ventures in Pakistan.
The meeting also explored cooperation in renewable energy, agriculture, food processing, aviation and aerospace. Discussions covered a proposed hybrid renewable-energy project in Jhimpir, Canadian solar solutions, dairy development, canola processing, animal genetics and value-added agricultural exports.
Both sides emphasised the importance of establishing joint ventures, expanding trade and creating stronger business links between Pakistan and Canada. The minister also highlighted Pakistan’s strategic location and connectivity with China, Central Asia and the Middle East as key advantages for Canadian businesses seeking new investment opportunities.
