Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a special fuel relief scheme for motorcycle, rickshaw, Qingqi and small vehicle owners amid rising global oil prices and increasing pressure on household budgets. Under the scheme, eligible users will receive a subsidy of Rs100 per litre on a specified monthly fuel quota.
Motorcycle and three-wheeler users will receive Rs100 per litre relief on up to 20 litres of fuel per month, while owners of vehicles up to 800cc will receive the same relief on a monthly quota of 30 litres. The government said the initiative aims to reduce the impact of higher petrol prices on the most affected segments of the public.
The fuel relief scheme will begin in Islamabad from midnight on September 15, while consumers across the rest of Pakistan, including Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, will receive the subsidy from midnight on September 17. Registration has already opened, with the government expected to provide details of the registration process through a public awareness campaign.
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik said the relief would be provided monthly through a registration and token-based system. Consumers will receive a token number after registration and can use it at participating petrol pumps to purchase fuel at the subsidised rate.
The announcement comes as international oil prices remain elevated due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East, disruptions to major oil supply routes and uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. In Pakistan, petrol recently rose to Rs375.82 per litre, while high-speed diesel reached Rs403.32 per litre.
The government has introduced the relief scheme as part of its efforts to cushion consumers from the impact of higher fuel costs and global energy market volatility.
