History & Background

Circle K launched in 1951 when Fred Hervey purchased three Kay’s Food Stores in El Paso, Texas, naming them Circle K Food Stores, Inc. Expansion followed into New Mexico and Arizona by 1957. Major growth occurred after acquiring UtoteM in 1983 (adding ~960 stores). In 2003, Alimentation Couche‑Tard acquired Circle K, and by 2015, the brand was globally unified under Circle K.

Achievements & Recognition

  • Expanded network to over 15,000 stores across U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, Middle East, Latin America by 2025.
  • $71.9 billion revenue (Alimentation Couche‑Tard in 2023) powering Circle K’s retail reach.
  • Global rebranding in 2015 unified multiple legacy brands under a cohesive identity.
  • Sustainability commitment to sell only cage‑free eggs across global network by 2025.

Specialties & Unique Selling Points

  • Training programs: mix of classroom, in-store mentoring, and web-based New Employee Training Program (NETP)
  • Access to Couche‑Tard’s global supply chain for competitive pricing and consistent quality
  • Scalable model: supports single-unit, multi-unit, and master‑license opportunities internationally

Franchise Model Explained

  • Operates under a franchise model globally, while many U.S. stores remain company‑owned. International locations frequently use master-license arrangements.
  • Initial term: 10 years, renewable once. No exclusive territory guaranteed—potential for nearby stores by franchisor or other franchisees.
  • Training & support: includes Franchisee Training, NETP for staff, ongoing field support
  • Financing assistance: brand may fund equipment/construction or help connect with lenders
  • Fee structure: tailored by single- or multi-site operator categories; multi‑site benefits lower royalty tier
  • Franchisee profile: active, hands‑on ownership expected; a qualified manager may operate if approved
