The Punjab Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution recommending restrictions on social media access for children under 16, with measures aimed at protecting young users from online risks and creating a safer digital environment.
The resolution, moved by Punjab Child Protection and Welfare Bureau Chairperson and MPA Sarah Ahmed, called for effective legislation to protect children from cyber harassment, online sexual exploitation and inappropriate content. It also recommended introducing a robust age-verification system on social media platforms to prevent underage users from accessing restricted services.
The resolution further urged social media companies to follow child protection standards and called for stronger coordination between federal and provincial institutions to safeguard children online.
Sarah Ahmed said protecting children and ensuring a secure digital future were key priorities for the Punjab government. She stressed that the state has a responsibility to protect children's best interests through an effective regulatory framework.
The move comes amid growing international efforts to regulate children's social media use. Countries including Australia, China, the UAE and Türkiye have introduced or considered measures to limit young people's access to social media. Australia became the first country to impose a social media ban for children under 16 in December.
Meanwhile, the European Union is considering stronger safeguards against harmful social media features, while social media companies have generally opposed blanket bans and maintained that age restrictions and existing safety measures can help protect younger users.
